How to stop rebuilding the same brief: reusable templates and checklists

A clipboard with a checklist of ticked items

If you brief, inspect or file the same kinds of things every week, most of the effort goes into rebuilding the format, not the content. A small set of templates and checklists gives that time back.

Start with the work you repeat

For one or two weeks, note every brief, report or inspection you redo. The ones that show up again and again are your first templates. Do not try to template everything on day one.

Build a skeleton, not a finished document

Turn routine steps into checklists

Keep them current

When a format or requirement changes, update the template once rather than fixing every copy. Always follow your organization's current guidance and policy, and never put classified or restricted information into a personal tool.

A tool that can help

BriefOpsKit keeps preloaded Marine templates for admin, training and ops, plus reusable checklists, on your phone. One-tap copy gets the text into whatever you already brief from. It works offline, stays on the device and has no ads. It is a personal productivity aid, not an official USMC system, and it does not handle classified material.
