How to copy text from a photo without uploading it

A phone camera frame around lines of text

Retyping a bill, a contract or a whiteboard by hand is slow, and it is how wrong numbers creep in. Text recognition (OCR) can pull the words off a photo for you. The steps below help you get clean text and keep private documents private.

Take a photo that reads well

Check the text before you trust it

OCR can confuse similar characters, such as 0 and O, 1 and l, or 5 and S. Before you paste a total, an account number or a date into anything important, compare it with the original photo line by line.

Know where the photo goes

Some text tools send your photo to a server to read it. That can be fine for a menu or a street sign. For a bill, a contract or anything with personal details, look for a tool that reads the text on the phone itself, so the image never leaves the device.

Keep what you scan findable

A tool that can help

PhotoTextFinder reads printed text on your phone, so the photo is not uploaded to read it. You can copy the text, and search a library of recent scans to find a line again. It works offline, with no account and no ads. It is a personal OCR tool, so always check numbers against the original.
